The Cannery Is Generous

I received a huge package from The Cannery on Thursday last week. Inside were 7 dice, two packs of playing cards, two pens, and 4 (four!) buffet tickets. We used the tickets Friday night. The total would have been about $50 for the four of us.

Though The Cannery was slow to respond, they did respond in kind, so I can only say that The Cannery is generous! The MGM should be ashamed.

Laughlin Trip Report - April 19th

My wife and I went to Laughlin on Friday, april 19th 2008. We try to go about three or four times a year. We were there a little more than a month ago, but we brought the baby so we were limited to what we could do.

As usually we stayed at the Edgewater and checked in around 4:00pm. We stayed in the Santa-Fe rooms which are the less expensive rooms and had a nice view of the Employee smoking area, storage facility and parking lot of the Colorado Belle.

Its tradition for us to drive over to the Arizona side (Bullhead City) and eat at China Panda, a restaurant located about 3 or four miles down the road.

When we returned to the Edgewater we walked over to the Colorado Belle and shared nachos and drank in the Boiler Room which is also a micro-brewery.

The next morning we took a river taxi down to Harrah's. Its $4 a person one way and its worth it since the boat ride is fun. We timed it perfectly and caught a taxi that was heading up river towards the Riverside. We got to stop at every hotel so all in all it was about a 20 minute boat ride there - were never in any particular rush so this was perfect for us. We ate breakfast at the care in the Harrahs, lost $2 then took the river taxi back to the Edgewater.

Then we went to the Outlet Mall across the street, bought a license plate frame that says Need Money? Visit BegForDollars.Com. We drove over to the Tropicana Express, waiting for a train that never came, then drove back over to the Edgewater.

We shared a hot dog at the sports book, played nickle keno, then wandered back over to The Boiler room, this time to share a pizza.

On the way back my wife bought a huge drink, we played keno some more then returned to our room.

To most this would seem like a pretty uneventful trip - but on the contrary for a couple who visits as often as we do it was one of the best.

MGM-MIRAGE - Not Generous

Today I received a generic post card from the MGM-Mirage. It says:

MGM MIRAGE
Charitable Giving Program
Thank you for your request for support from
MGM MIRAGE.

Each year, we receive many requests from individuals seeking support for their specific needs. While all of these requests have merit and are deserving of attention, our company's policy is to provide assistance where it will have the broadest impact on our community. In light of this commitment, we regret that MGM MIRAGE cannot contribute to your request.

Additionally, MGM MIRAGE does not support:
  • Requests with fall outside of communities in which our employees live, work and support their families
  • Requests for any type of gaming items (new or previously used for children
  • Organizations that discriminate by race, color, greed, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or national origin
  • Grants or sponsorships to individuals
  • Athletic sponsorships of individuals or teams

While we are unable to participate in your request, we sincerely wish you the best of success.

This is a terrible failure on the part of the MGM MIRAGE. Unlike Binions who read the letter and provided promotional items from their hotel it seems the MGM MIRAGE simply has a stone cold reply. I'm going to assume that its also a no for the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, New-York New-York, Luxor, Excalibur, Boardwalk (which has been gone for years but is still labeled on the card), Circus Circus, Railroad Pass, Primm Valley Resorts, Silver Legacy. They even mention The Colorado Belle and the Edgewater - two properties in Laughlin which they are no longer apart of (at least thats what I'm led to understand.)

Regardless its a shame that this was MGM-MIRAGE's response. So I guess I'll have to say they are not generous at all.

Binion's Hotel and Gambling Hall Is Generous

Just when I was going to announce the Las Vegas Experiment as a complete failure, the fabulous Binion’s Gambling Hall & Hotel pulled through.

On March 6th, 2008 I found a small manila envelope in my mailbox. Inside, there was a hand written note that said:

Mr. Salzman

Thank you for your interest in items from our hotel. We definitely strive to provide the best for all of our hotel guests.

Although this is not much, here are a few items we thought you may enjoy!

We look forward to your future visit with us,

Sincerely,
Hotel Management

In addition, there was a deck of playing cards, a pair of very cool purple colored dice, a pen, a book of matches, and a hotel key, all blazoned with “Binion’s” on them. It’s common to find these items in the gift shops of the hotels, but the fact that they sent them with a very nice handwritten note is awesome.

So is Binion’s Gambling Hall & Hotel generous? Well, if this is any indication of their hospitality I’d have to say hell yes!

Still Waiting For The First Replies / Primarily PrimeRib

Tomorrow will mark one week since the letters were dropped in the mail. I figured they'd arrive at the casinos by either Thursday or Friday, maybe even Saturday, and with today being President's Day I don't expect to receive any reply until the earliest of this thursday.

This weekend we ate at the new prime rib restaurant "Primary PrimeRib" at the SouthPoint. It wasn't expensive at all and it had a reasonable atmosphere. The reservationist was pretty clueless and could have been more polite.

Step 4 Put The Letters In The Mail Box

The first 18 letters destined for the casinos are ready to go. They include the Circus Circus, The Cannery, The California, Caesars Palace, Buffalo Bill's (Which I heard Terrible's Purchased), Boulder Station, Binions, Bellagio, Barbary Coast, Bally's, Arizona Charlies (Decatur), Arizona Charlies (Boulder), Aquarius (Laughlin), Green Valley Ranch (Nice buffet by the way) , Golden Nugget, Excalibur, El Cortez, and Edgewater (Laughlin).

If I were to make a prediction most of these properties will reply. Whether or not they will reply in kind is hard to say. Based on my experience in all of these properties I'd say that the Edgewater, Aquarius, and Cannery are the most friendly. The Bellagio, Golden Nugget, and Green Valley Ranch seems particularly sterile to me, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are not generous.

I'd say at least half of those who do reply will refer me to their player's club.

Stamps

Late last night I purchased stamps and damn they were expensive. $9 for 18. Clearly a convinience fee. After sending this first batch to the casino/hotels I'm hoping their response will be motivation (guilt) enough to send the rest. And since the funds from this experiment is coming from my other web ventures (www.salaciousdonations, www.salzmodels.com, www.usefulcomplaints.com, www.begfordollars.com, etc.) the follow-through is even more critical.
